Making Sense of Aromas

Making Sense of Aromas

The right aromas can play a big part in making your home an inviting place to live. The majority of us have at some time or another created an atmosphere of pleasant scents to enhance our environment. Let’s face it a home that smells good is not only a pleasure to live in but inviting to guests who visit.

There are a multitude of options available both natural and artificial to make your home smell wonderful. First and foremost start with a clean home. Trying to cover up stale odors is not recommended and will compete with whatever scent you have decided upon. Once you’ve accomplished this task the options are relatively endless and based on personal preference.

One of the more popular choices today is essential oil diffusers. They disperse essential oils into the air and can impact your mood. There are many choices on the market today ranging from a low of $20 to well over $100, so do your homework before purchasing and check buyer reviews. If a diffuser is not in your budget you can opt for a reed diffuser set. The sticks absorb the scented liquid from the container and release fragrance into the surrounding air.

If you are thinking about placing an aroma in a small space such as a bathroom or bedroom, a candle especially a beeswax candle is the way to go. They tend to be a bit more expensive than paraffin-based candles but they last nearly twice as long.

A more natural method to infuse scent is to purchase flowering plants or a beautiful bouquet of flowers. You can also dry these flowers and make your own potpourri to display in decorative jars.

Lastly you can always create your own simmer pot with your favorite scents. Try this simple recipe to invoke the aromas of fall.

Pumpkin Spice Simmer Pot

4 tablespoons apple cider
A generous sprinkle of pumpkin spice seasoning
Cinnamon sticks
Ground nutmeg
A drop of vanilla extract
Whole cloves

Fill your pot with water, add ingredients and continue to boil for a few minutes, and then turn the heat down to simmer for desired time. Add water as needed.
